In all addiction treatment, applying all tools is the best approach.
This could include therapy, peer support, family therapy, medication
treatment, and treatment for co-occurring problems, from
depression to child care to legal issues and more. Some evidencebased
therapy types for addiction include motivational enhancement,
matrix model, cognitive behavioral therapy, family
behavioral therapy, mutual help group, and twelve-step facilitation
(see page 17 for a detailed explanation). When each is used alone,
in a bubble, it tends to stay below the 30–40 percent success rate.
But when used together, they make brain changes and help with
continued abstinence, as well as long-term stability and life
improvement. In criminal justice settings, when medication and
therapy are added to abstinence, success rates at least double.
